In Which I Agree With Richard Dawkins on Intelligent Design
Being a well-within-the-box-atheist-group-thinker Richard Dawkins cannot expand his mind outwards to that which a finite universe implies.
He continues to looking for God in all the wrong places (and in all the wrong ways).
This became apparent again in a statement with which I agree as he had a discussion with Ben Stein in Expelled – No Intelligence Allowed (see here, here).
Ben Stein: What do you think is the possibility that Intelligent Design might turn out to be the answer to some issues in genetics or in Darwinian evolution?
Richard Dawkins: It could come about in the following way: It could be that at some earlier time, somewhere in the universe, a civilization evolved by probably some kind of Darwinian means to a very, very high level of technology, and designed a form of life that they seeded on to, perhaps this planet. Now that is a possibility, and an intriguing possibility. And I suppose it’s possible that you might find evidence for that, if you look at the details of bio-chemistry, molecular biology, you might find a signature of some sort of designer.
Ben Stein (narrating): Wait a second! Richard Dawkins thought that Intelligent Design might be a legitimate pursuit?
Richard Dawkins: And that designer could very well be a higher intelligence from elsewhere in the universe. But that higher intelligence itself would have to had have come about by some explicable or ultimately explicable process. It couldn’t have just jumped into existence spontaneously. That’s the point.
Indeed, Richard Dawkins is quite right. If the designer is a higher intelligence from elsewhere in the universe it would have to have come about by some explicable or ultimately explicable, Darwinian, process.
Let us consider two issues:
1) He supposes the possibility of finding such evidence by studying “the details of bio-chemistry, molecular biology.”
He has conducted such studies, he was viewed the evidence but he then denies the evidence, urges others to do likewise and concocts tall tales in order to explain away the evidence. This was likewise done by Francis Crick who is an atheist alien intelligent design proponent.
Richard Dawkins wrote, “Biology is the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose” (The Blind Watchmaker, p. 1).
Francis Crick wrote, “Biologists must constantly keep in mind that what they see was not designed, but rather evolved” (What Mad Pursuit, p. 138).
They must keep it in mind because their particular atheistic worldview adherence will not allow them to think otherwise. Although, they both allow for intelligent design via aliens so, I just do not get it—I suppose that design is too close that God for atheist comfort.
2) He, rightly, states that aliens could not have just jumped into existence spontaneously.
Yet, his own view of life’s origin is what? That is just jumped into existence spontaneously. He actually fills the gaps in our knowledge with the luck-of-the-gaps:
It is as though, in our theory of how we came to exist, we are allowed to postulate a certain ration of luck (The Blind Watchmaker, p. 145).
Explain[ing] how the complex, improbable appearance of design in the universe arises...makes heavier demands on luck(The God Delusion, p. 121).
Is it any wonder that he concludes,
We don’t actually need a plausible theory of the origin of life (The Greatest Show on Earth, p. 421—considered here, here and here).
In any regard, he is quite right in noting the infinite regress, the answer that does not answer the question but merely pushes the question further back in time. Yet, his mind is locked within the box of the universe and he is thus looking to life in the universe to explain life in the universe since it could be that life begat life and was begotten by life, etc.
By restricting his thought to that which is within the box he is exercising adherence to absolute materialism as was done by Carl Sagan, “the cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be,” by Dan Barker, “There are no gods…There is only our natural world,” by Daniel Dennett, “We atheists don't believe that there is any God,” Dawkins, “God is not dead. He was never alive in the first place,” and on it goes.
Yet, it is perfectly cogent to conclude that there is something outside of, beyond, the universe which created it and fine tuned it for life. I will not reiterate the argument here since it is laid out and juxtaposed with others in my essay On the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the Invisible Pink Unicorns, et al.
The only retort left to personages such as Richard Dawkins is to ask “Who designed the designer?”
As Dawkins explains it (in The Blind Watchmaker), “To explain the origin of the DNA/protein machine by invoking a supernatural Designer is to explain precisely nothing, for it leaves unexplained the origin of the Designer.”
As seconded by Christopher Hitchens (in God Is Not Great), “who designed the designer or created the creator? Religion and theology have consistently failed to overcome this objection.”
As Daniel Dennett (in Darwin’s Dangerous Idea) put it in referencing Richard Dawkins; he declares that it is an “unrebuttable refutation, as devastating today as when Philo used it to trounce Cleanthes in Hume’s Dialogues two centuries earlier.”
And as of course, Richard Dawkins (in The God Delusion) quotes Daniel Dennett who is quoting Richard Dawkins and proclaims that Daniel Dennett is correct in approving of Richard Dawkins!
I have dealt with this issue in the Spaghetti/Unicorns essay and will do so again in an upcoming essay on atheist circular logic.

Science, Dawkins and Religion
Anonymous — Mon, 09/06/2010 - 4:39pmMariano,
You are clearly very bright. You write very well. And you clearly find Richard Dawkins highly irritating.
However, you might stop to consider this: Why do you think Dawkins is such a avid dismanteler of religious beliefs? He's an evolutionary biologist by trade. That's where he started, not as a militant atheist. His early books, like the selfish gene, for example, barely even mention religion. Why should they? It has absolutely nothing to do with science. Yet some of his later books are focused entirely on religion. Why?
The answer, I believe, is simple. When intelligent, religious people read his compelling, early works, they realised his message, although scientific (and built on over 100 years of scientific papers, from dozens of hugely respected authors), disagreed with claims made by their religion(s).
The problem with such a challenge, these people realised, is that if a *part* of their religious dogma is proved false by science, then this casts doubt on the whole lot, potentially threatening their entire religious beliefs. Many people have much invested in religion of choice, and gain much from it: Friendships, their feeling of belonging to a group, the comforting feeling of life after death, the reassuring feeling of everything being part of a 'master plan'; all of this they stood to lose from the claims of an evolutionary biologist with a penchant for writing for the lay reader. And so they attacked him.
They through the book at him. They made every effort to show that all of the claims he made were false. 'Half an eye is no use, hence it cannot possibly evolve'. And what did Dawkins do? What any respectable academic does in the face of criticism: Studiously found evidence to refute all of the claims, and then wrote another book in which to publish it. And so he did. But he was still attacked by people with a vested interest in ensuring their religion was not challenged. They just ignored his refutations, and moved on to other arguments.
Dawkins refuted those, too. In fact, he didn't really refute them himself - much of the evidence required was already present in the huge scientific literature on evolution - he just included it in his books for the lay reader. but eventually, he became embroiled in a dirty fight with the religious lobby. He started as a mere evolutionary biologist, but after continuous bating, seems to have decided that he will not stop until religion is completely unmasked as superstition. Modern Dawkins is a product of religious attacks.
Most evolutionary scientists, myself included, don't usually bother trying to deconvert religious people, or use logic to dismantle their shaky beleifs: It's just too easy, and it's almost entirely pointless. One can win a logical argument ten times over with someone who has a huge emotional investment in religion, but it will make no difference. They are not interested in logic. They *choose* to believe, logic or no, because they have simply too much invested in it.
I guess my overall point is this: Early on, Dawkins, like any good scientist, didn't really care which theory was right - he only cared that whichever theory it was best fitted the available evidence. In this case, the theory that best fits the data (at present) is evolution (I have a masters degree from Oxford in Geology, and I'm mid way through a PhD in evolutionary biology, so I really have studied it in great detail), just like the theory for the shape of the world that best fits the data is that its roughly spherical. The important point is that scientists have nothing to gain by promoting one theory over another. If they discover some evidence, which leads to a theory, they will get the credit *regardless* of what the exact mechanism of the theory is. If the evidence had most strongly suggested that life came from a giant floating meatball, Darwin would have gone with that. Other scientists, as with any theory, would try to prove him wrong - so all the more reason to go with the theory that best fits the evidence, so that you're most likely to be right (and least likely to be proved wrong - every academic's worst nightmare).
So scientists have no prejudice as to which theory is right - they don't care - they get the credit if it stands up to rigorous analysis and comparison with the evidence, not for any other reason.
Religious people, on the other hand, do have a *massive* prejudice for believing one theory over another. They have nothing to gain by favouring the theory that best fits the evidence, as unlike scientific theories, their personal beliefs are not subject to peer review. But they stand to lose everything if they believe in any theory other than the one defined by their particular flavour of religion.
What would you expect someone in this position to do? Of course, you'd expect the to completely disregard the evidence, and stick with the belief that they have so much invested in. After all, they still get to benefit from technologies, medicine, transport... (the list goes on) that are all products of scientific inquiry, even if they shun the scientific method just this once. After all, they're not evolutionary biologists, so why should they care?
This is almost definitely what you will do whilst reading this article. Some part of your brain that processes logic will perhaps see some truth in the picture I have painted of the situation, but then the part that stands to loose so much from the rejection of religion will kick in and force you to reject logic instead. Which is perhaps a shame.
The difference then, between you and I, is that if tomorrow, new, scientifically indisputable evidence evidence came to light proving that god really did make Adam and Eve and the earth really is 6000 years old, I would be happy to accept it, because it would be the theory that best fitted the evidence - and that is science after all. On the other hand, if tomorrow new evidence came to light that instead proved beyond doubt that the biblical account of creation is wrong, you'd probably just ignore it and carry on believing regardless. After all, there is already plenty of evidence to show that this is the case, and you seem to have been happy to ignore it up until now.
Regards,
Adam
Brief Reply on Dawkins
Anonymous — Tue, 01/03/2012 - 3:43pmYou make a few statements in your reply that lead me to believe you are not following this article:
"Why do you think Dawkins is such a avid dismanteler of religious beliefs?"
"The answer, I believe, is simple. When intelligent, religious people read his compelling, early works, they realised his message, although scientific (and built on over 100 years of scientific papers, from dozens of hugely respected authors), disagreed with claims made by their religion(s)."
Their have been plenty of Atheist arguments that are quite dismantling, the simple fact is none have been made by Dawkins. When debating with Creationists (Who make up less than 40 % among Christians, less than 45% among Muslims, and less than 26% among Jews) Dawkins is able to make a competent rational argument. When discussing religion outside the context of Creationism (i.e. outside of genesis which accounts for 40 pages of a 1000+ page book) he comes across as an ignorant fool. The consensus on that holds true Even among Atheist Philosophers. They agree his arguments are of no sound or logical basis, and his thought process gets compared to that of a child questioning religion for the very first time when he attempts to debate people like Ravi Zacharias.
When debating with Physicists Like John Lennox, they mock him by asking him how he can call himself a scientist while not having even the most basic understanding of concepts in Math or Physics. That is one of the reasons he personally turns me off. He proclaims his Atheist movement is in the name of Science, but as someone with both Math and Engineering degrees I can tell you Richard Dawkins is not qualified to refer to himself as a Scientist. I have seem him admit to this in discussions with Physicists such as Neil Tyson, but it does not stop him from continuously throwing out false claims.
When speaking on religion he misconstrues morality and faith showing he has no understanding of either. Faith is not blind faith, it is something you presume to be true based on the supporting evidence. As an example:
I had complete FAITH in Einstein's Theory of relativity (E=mC^2). However supposedly that was recently disproven. In every physics class I attempted to follow the mathematical proofs of all formulas outlined in the text books (really helped with complex problems in labs etc ...), and I remember Einstein's theory had a proof listed as well. Even with a proof, as it turns out it was wrong.
The bottom line is some Atheists put forth well thought out rational ideas, Richard Dawkins simply spits out snide cutting remarks similar to what you might expect from a teenage school boy. As a result he attracts mindless followers much like a Baptist Evangelist.
