The Creation of Adam

The purpose of this contemplation is not to literally conclude whether or not the Holy Spirit of God actually inspired Michelangelo Bouonarotti in his rendition of "The creation of Adam," which he painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. However, we have noticed aspects of this fresco that seem to illustrate certain truths about the nature of man and the nature of God as revealed in the Word of God.

God

1-God is literally flying to meet with Adam
2-Body purposefully extended
3-Arm actively extended, the right hand of His power
4-Even His finger is stretching out
5-God descends to His creation
6-God already has all of creation on His back, relying on Him
7-Clothed in His robe

"In the Beginning GOD_"
God, being our Father, is always ready and willing to run to our defense, run to our comfort, and run to forgive us. Just as He is represented in the story of the prodigal son. The sinful, wasteful, arrogant son returns home in shame to confess his sin to his father, yet "when he was still a long ways off his father saw him and had compassion and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him" (Luke 15:20). The father not only forgives his son but he goes on to clothe him, feed him, and celebrates his safe return and repentance (Luke 15:22-23). God is "Not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (2nd Peter 3:9). "There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents" (Luke 15:10). "And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us" (Acts 17:26-27).

God is the one in action. He created all things, He provides all things, and He seeks all mankind in hopes that they will respond to His offer of salvation. "Thus says God the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk on it" (Isaiah 42:5). "For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace not of evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him" (John 4:23). "No one can come to me [Jesus] unless the Father who sent me draws him; I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:44). "No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit" (1st Corinthians 12:3).

There are many references in the scripture to God's hand, which signifies His power, strength, and ability to deliver. "Him [Christ] God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins" (Acts 5:31). "Therefore [Christ] being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear" (Acts 2:33). "O LORD God, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like your works and your mighty deeds?" (Deuteronomy 3:24). "And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm" (Deuteronomy 5:15). "Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand" (Psalm 20:6).

God does not expect Adam or humanity to become exalted, righteous, or godlike in order to extend His blessings. God does not expect us to ascend to Him, in fact God always descends humbly to us to clearly demonstrate His love and provision. God descends to the Garden of Eden to be with Adam (Genesis 2:21-3:8). He descends, as the Angel of the LORD to reveal His will to Moses (Exodus 3:2). He descends to lead His people from Egypt (Exodus 16:10, 14:24). He descends in order to be present in the tabernacle and the temple (Exodus 33:9-11, 1st Kings 8:10). He descends, as the Commander of the army of the LORD (Joshua 5:13-14). He descends and incarnates to atone for our sins (Matthew 2:1). The Holy Spirit descends to the disciples at Pentecost, and in order to alight on Jesus (Acts 2:2-4 Matthew 3:16). He descends to the New Jerusalem to live with His children (Revelation 3:12, 21:2-3).

God is clothed, in the scripture robes are symbolic of protection, righteousness, and spotless purity. "He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness" (Isaiah 61:10). "In the year king Uzziah died, I saw the LORD sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple" (Isaiah 6:1).
"Now she had on a robe of many colors, for the king's virgin daughters wore such apparel" (2nd Samuel 13:18). "I will clothe him with your robe and strengthen him with your belt; I will commit your responsibility into his hand. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah" (Isaiah 22:21). "I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban" (Job 29:14).

Adam

1-Not seeking after God, barely reaching out to him
2-Sitting, slouched
3-Arm extended only due to it resting on his knee, therefore, he is not holding it up
4-Limp wrist
5-Limp finger
6-Resting on God's creation, resting on God's provision
7-Not at work but resting
8-Naked

"In the beginning God CREATED_"
Adam is at rest, not yet a laborer. God does assign Adam a task, however, it is clear that before the fall Adam enjoys the seemingly simple tasks of tending the garden and naming animals. "Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it" (Genesis 2:15). "Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name" (Genesis 2:19). After the fall however Adam's workload is significantly increased and handed down to all humanity as a curse. "Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life" (Genesis 3:17). "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground" (Genesis 3:19).

Adam is only facing God due to the physics of his posture. Adam and humanity do not seek after God. We do not take it upon ourselves by our own strength and will to seek after righteousness or forgiveness. "The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is none who does good, no, not one" (Psalm 14:2-3).

"And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed" (Genesis 2:25). "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there" (Job 1:21). Adam is naked yet not shamefully. He is not clothed with the fig leaves that he and Eve made, representing a human attempt to cover sin (Genesis 3:7). He is not yet clothed in the tunics of skin that God made for them, representing not only a true covering of sin but pointing out that it is God Himself who provides atonement for sin (Genesis 3:21). In this case by the sacrifice of an animal, which is in itself symbolic, as is the whole sacrificial system, of the ultimate atonement that was made by the Messiah Jesus.

Adam is resting on God's creation and provision. God plants the garden, provides food, and water for the garden, He creates the man and the woman to be partners.
"See I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food" (Genesis 1:29). "The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed" (Genesis 2:8). "And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food" (Genesis 2:9). "Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden" (Genesis 2:10). "And the LORD God said 'It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him'" (Genesis 2:18).

"Good and upright is the LORD
therefore He teaches sinners in the way"
Psalm 25:8

There isn’t anything more

Anonymous — Fri, 09/16/2011 - 12:58pm

There isn’t anything more pathetic than ignorant Religious people ranting they are not really ignorant…when they are. Why did Jesus say, "I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." (Mark 10:15)
Why? Because an accredited education kills god every time, the bible demands retardation of its members. Blind belief and the mind of a child who doesn’t understand the difference will almost always accept the lies of all/any religion/s offers as truth. The bible, their bible states this as well Did the men who Jesus used to preach His gospel - men who were, "uneducated and untrained men" - seek to change those characteristics, or teach others to become educated and trained? (Acts 4:13)
This religion was created for slaves by their masters, it remains so self-contradictory for the same reasons, and it didn’t have to be perfect because it was always meant for the uneducated.
So let them worship in ignorance, but let them do it quietly otherwise they shouldn’t expect NOT to get called to the carpet when they spew the kind of ignorance that professing the bibles’ evil as wisdom.
Theism is shrinking, their numbers decrease yearly, maybe this to will subside as funding for education is cut, but I doubt it very much. Your god is dead; the internet killed him as it kills all gods….

expletives

Anonymous — Sat, 04/16/2011 - 9:40am

let me just say as a Christian.. using expletives like this just brings Christ down.Dawkins has on youtube emails sent to him by so-called Christians who use such bad language like this. Its great material and publicity for him and his atheist mates because he makes the very good point that God is a myth and you can see it in these very ungodly emails.Im not talking about Christians being meek and mild but putting over strong forceful arguments like William lane Craig Dinesh De Susa John Lennox etc. They win all of their debates with militant atheists like Hitchens and Harris and Dawkins without using expletives and personal attacks its why God is in their corner.

creationists are statistically less intelligent than atheists

as far as the subject goes, look it up there have been several studies on this issue.

Nice! Several studies, even!

Anonymous — Sat, 03/12/2011 - 12:18am

Nice! Several studies, even! Well, this is anecdotal, but most of the very intelligent people I meet are Christian; and I regularly associate with many who are irreligious/atheist. Seeing as your references are non-existent, I'd say it's a good enough reply. A slightly better reply would be to remind you that most big thinkers for the last 1000, 200, 100, or even 50 years have identified as Christian, and no only that, but expounded on their beliefs (i.e., it wasn't a mask to be accepted within society). I'll go just a bit further.

Lets just assume you, and even the studies you speak vaguely of, are not full of crap and that people that identify as Christians (or X-tians; I'm sure you like that better) have statistically lower IQ scores. Well, seeing as identifying as X-tian is the social norm, more of the complete non-thinkers/sheep will indeed identify as X-tian. Now, if/when atheism becomes the social norm and more widely accepted than X-tianity, the non-thinkers/sheep will identify as atheist, and X-tians will have higher IQ scores on average.

Perfectly reasonable interpretation of the studies you hand-waved.

The essay above is so full of faith-based pseudo-truth that I refuse to sink to the level of trying to argue with it all. Instead, I'll spend my time replying to the comments other people have made.

Grady, we already know what causes different weather patterns. At this point it's only a matter of manipulating the variables that cause varying weather conditions. It's not controlling, per say, but manipulating. It's a very dangerous business, because we can't possibly predict the repercussions of that interference. We can, theoretically, create a storm cell over a rival country and wreak havoc; whether this cell would be self-sustaining, or stronger than a summer breeze, is difficult to predict now.

You also imply a 'slippery slope' regarding genetic manipulation. Parents paying insane amounts of cash to choose certain aspects of their child's physical appearance is nowhere near the state controlling every aspect of its future citizens. Rest assured, advancements in understanding of the human genome and genetic manipulation will not invariably lead to authoritarian states commanding, not only how to live your life, but who you are as well.

Controlling Nature?

Grady (not verified) — Tue, 05/04/2010 - 2:18am

Kay, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but man still does not control nature.

If you believe that by 2025 the military will control the weather, you obviously don't have much science background.

And even if that were true, do you think this knowledge will be used to help mankind? If so, you obviously don't have much background in history or political science, either.

And if you think that "genetic engineering" will not be used to control humanity to an unprecedented degree, then you have really exposed the Bankruptcy of Atheism...the elimination of God is the necessary step to making the STATE God.

Science vs Religion

Kay (not verified) — Thu, 03/25/2010 - 8:02am

For milennia, religion provided many of the answers to life's mysteries, like what caused disease, why there were disasters, why there is suffering, and even the age of the planet. It was accepted that suffering meant punishment by the gods, natural disasters were the products of their anger, and within the Judeo-christian domain, the planet was less than 10,000 years old. Before writing was developed, legends were recounted by word-of-mouth down the ages in every civilization, providing dramatic explanations for the many mysteries of life, and also solace in the face of the most worrisome mystery of all: death.

Throughout his development, man has feared nature, because he had no control over it. Storms came and took lives. Earthquakes came, mountain peaks blew their top and vomited liquid fire down its sides and belched ash several hundred feet in the sky. It seemed like somebody was angry, because people kept dying in these disasters, so much blood was shed. Man noticed that the invisible powers, or whoever it was that caused the earth to open. the winds to throw giant trees to the ground and the sea to become a wall of water that took wives, husbands, children, mothers and fathers away, those invisible powers had to be respected, or else you could die in the next disaster. "Look how much blood it took, look how many dead were buried after that last volcano." "Perhaps the invisible powers need blood every now and then", thought man, so in order to avert another disaster, man took the initiative of shedding the blood himself and delivering it to the powers.

Thus the notion of blood sacrifice was born:

"Invisible powers, if we bring you blood, will you spare us another disaster?"
Of course because some volcanoes erupted only once in a lifetime, some communities may have believed the blood sacrifices were effective when they saw no recurrence of the eruption or the trembling of the ground. Superstition then gave way to orgaized religions in communities everywhere, hence the plurality of faiths.

Primitive man did not know about microbes and what caused disease. It was a mystery when one of his clan vomited and died, or just didn't wake up from sleep. When a woman died in childbirth or gave birth to a stillborn. He didn't know that his teeth were so close to his brain that the bacteria from their decay could quickly travel to his bloodstream into his brain and his heart. Medical science has now linked dental caries to heart disease.

Man was baffled about death for it was the common fate shared by all, and when we have no facts or suitable explanations, you know what we do: we develop a conspiracy theory.

Legends were handed down in many civilizations, that fires raged beneath the earth that would sometimes open and swallow many, so the legend of hell began, for man had to link that to his notion of appeasing the powers, hence a system of punishment and reward...and if everything evil was beneath the earth, to find a place from whence blessings came was easy. The sky. From the sky came the sun which provided warmth and light. From the sky came the rain that brought precious water, which man found he could not live without. So man looked to the sky or the benevolence of the invisible powers and to the earth beneath for their fury. The powers could also light up the skies at midnight, when it seemed they were angry, because the rumbling sounded like the roars of a thousand lions. Man thought he could hear the voice of the gods in the thunder. Soon he began to think he could interpret the voices

So guess what? Man named a god for each aspect or item of nature, just so he wouldn't have to offend any o the powers. And he worked out a system to appease those gods, bow to them, pray to them, bring flowers, the best animals, virgins, babies -- the gods could have anything they wanted. Just spare us the horrific disaster. Just spare us the final death.

But after so many years of giving the gods blood, people still died, and man could not accept a reality of not seeing his loved ones again, so ideas of the afterlife came to the fore. What happens after we die, he thought.

Science now provides many answers for microbes and disease; we now understand about bacteria, viruses and the mutation of singular-celled organisms; we know exactly what causes thunder and lightning, and we know that we live on a planet that is constantly trying to cool itself, shifting its outer crust to relieve built-up pressure in the core. We know that the closer you get to the center of the earth the hotter the furnace burns, and we know why a mountain ejects ash into the air and liquid rock chases people and animals down the mountainsides and swallows up whole villages below.

We know now that the natural disasters are not the result of some angry god; we know that a female's monthly emissions are not the result of a curse, and that there was no reason for her to bring sacrifices to any priest as was necessary under Mosaic law. We know virgins do not all respond the same at their first sexual experience, so stoning a young bride to death if there was no evidence she was a virgin on her wedding night, was sheer ignorance.

Science now knows about continental drift, the continents moving apart over the ages, even more so with the many tectonic shifts occuring every hour. Science has also worked out the passage of time by studying geological deposits, layers of rock of varying types, and by carbon dating.

We know the world is not 6,000 years old and woman was not made from a man's rib. Few of us now read the creation story and take it literally as mankind drifts into the Age of Skepticism. In 2025 the US military, it is said, will control the weather, and we expect breakthroughs in science regarding the human genome and our DNA -- controlling what is passed down in our genes from our forebears, thus genetically engineering the species. Whether you wish to believe it or not, these are the current trends. Science has demystified nature.

The only mystery that science has no answers for is "what happens when we die?" -- a mystery that religion claims to answer, based on faith, of course. But what is faith based on?

Re: Science vs Religion

Please don't tell me that Atheism gave us the gift of knowledge.
Science is just a gift of knowledge from God like art, literature, music, etc.

Don't hide behind the curtain of science, its not the ultimate truth cos the ultimate truth never changes, remember.

Where do you find the evidence that people ever believed as you described?

Pulled it out of thin air?

Anonymous — Sun, 03/13/2011 - 5:36am

I could be really bitchy and claim I pulled it out of thin air, just like the ancients created God, but I won't do that. How come you're not aware that in some parts of the world people still believe as I have described? THey still believe God punishes through sickness and natural disasters. There are folks who still bury their virgin daughters (alive) if the soil is not fertile, and who believe that if you are constructing a building, blood needs to be shed, or the building won't hold up. Yes, there are those who still think like this in the 21st century. Superstition abounds most among the ignorant` illiterate and ill-educated, even when it is packaged in organized religion, where folks still cling to the ancient belief that blood must be shed for "remission of sins". God must be sick, getting a rise out of all that blood.
